Where Your Sound Actually Comes From

If your sound is different every week depending on who happens to be mixing, that's the thing worth fixing. It's usually not where people go looking for it.

Four things decide what comes out of your speakers. Source tones, arrangement, the console, and the PA.

Almost everybody starts at the console. That's backwards. The console is a polish tool, and if your volunteers are using it to fix things, whatever they're fixing started somewhere upstream of them. A decent PA, put roughly where the manufacturer says to put it, usually isn't your bottleneck either.

Which leaves source tones and arrangement. What the guitar actually sounds like before it hits a preamp. Whether the keys and the electric are sitting on top of each other. Whether five people are all playing at once because nobody ever told them not to. That's where almost all of the real work is, and none of it belongs to the person behind the console.

So most of what I do ends up being with worship leaders, not just techs. Your tech team is downstream of everything your worship team decided on Thursday night.

About Me

If you're the one responsible for how Sunday sounds and nobody ever trained you for that part, I know the feeling. That's how I started.

I was 15 when my youth pastor heard me singing at a rehearsal and put me on stage that night without really asking. I only wanted to play guitar. There was no sound person at that church either, so I ended up learning that side too. That was 21 years ago and I haven't had a gap since. I've either led a worship team, been on staff at a church, or run a tech team, and usually more than one of those at the same time.

I also spent years on the professional side. Production companies, installs, freelance engineering, studio work, and touring with conferences and Christian events, until I got tired of the travel and stopped around 2020. What I kept coming back to was normal churches with normal budgets and normal volunteers.

I still mix an X32 and a WING at my church every Sunday. I'll be behind one this week.

The reason I can help with both sides is that I've sat in both chairs. I've been the worship leader with nobody to run sound, and I've been the sound guy who could hear exactly what the band was doing wrong and had no idea how to bring it up.
