WORK WITH JAKE

Worship Sound Coaching for Churches

Work with me directly on your worship team and your tech team. One-time help or ninety days of one on one coaching.

What We Can Work On

Source tones

The electric sounds huge on stage and disappears in the room. The acoustic is thin and no amount of EQ fixes it. Your keys and your electric are sitting on top of each other every week and neither one has any room. Somebody bought a new amp or a new pedal and now everything is worse than it was.

I'll help you get the tones right where they start, on the stage, so your tech team isn't spending Sunday morning trying to repair them at the console.

Arrangement

Everybody is playing everything, all the time, and there's nothing left for the vocal to sit in. Every song runs at the same intensity from the first downbeat to the last chord. You already know the arrangement is part of the problem, but you don't know how to hand somebody a part without it landing like a critique.

We'll work on building arrangements around the players you actually have on your team, and on how to talk about it with them.

Your Worship Team and Your Tech Team

It sounds different every week depending on who's mixing. Your tech volunteers don't know how to use EQ and compression. Nobody knows what to ask for and nobody wants to be the one to bring it up. This is usually the part that makes everything else stick, because a lot of sound problems in a church are really communication problems between two teams that don't speak the same language.

Who You'd Be Working With

I've been doing this for 21 years without a gap.

I started at 15 when my youth pastor heard me singing at a rehearsal and put me on stage that night without really asking. Since then I've either led a worship team, been on staff at a church, or run a tech team. There was no sound person at that first church, so I learned that side too, and I've been doing both ever since.

I also spent years on the professional side. Production companies, installs, freelance engineering, studio work, and touring with conferences and Christian events, until I got tired of the travel and stopped around 2020. What I kept coming back to was normal churches with normal teams and normal budgets. I still mix at my own church every Sunday.

The reason I can help with both sides is that I've sat in both chairs. I've been the worship leader with nobody to run sound, and I've been the sound guy who could hear exactly what the band was doing wrong and had no idea how to bring it up.

I can help you to.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I know which option to choose?

    • Here's a quick guide:

    • Livestream Audit — You want an honest read on where you are right now. You get the video and instructions on how to improve it, you go work on it.

    • One-Song Intensive — You want to hear one of your own songs done the way I'd do it, and learn the process so you can run it yourself on the next one.

    • 90-Day Coaching — The problem isn't one mix, it's how your team works. Ninety days is enough time to actually change it.

    • Not sure? Start with an audit. It's the cheapest way to find out whether we're hearing the same things, and we can always go further from there.

  • What console do I need?

    • For the audit, anything. I'm listening to your service, not your board.

    • The show files and custom scenes are built for the Behringer X32, the Midas M32, and the WING, because those are what I mix on every week. If you're on something else you still get everything else, you'd just be building the settings yourself while you watch. Most of what I'm going to tell you isn't console specific anyway.

    • If you're not sure whether I can help with your setup, just ask before you buy. If I can't, I'll tell you.

  • What do you need from me?

    • For the audit, a link to a recent service. A YouTube or Facebook stream is fine, and so is a recording. If you can tell me what you already know is wrong, that helps me prioritize, but it isn't required.

    • For the intensive, multitracks from one song and a list of who plays what. You'll receive an intake form when you purchase asking for everything. If you've never pulled a multitrack off your console before, I can walk you through it. On the X32 and WING it's easier than most people think.

    • For the 90-day program, a livestream link with your application so I can see what I'd be working with before either of us commits to anything.

  • Do I have to get on a call?

    • No. The only scheduled call anywhere in this is the monthly one inside the 90-day program, and even that one gets recorded so you can go back to it.

    • There's no sales call either. If you want the audit or the intensive, you buy it and we get started.

  • What if the problem is my PA?

    • Sometimes it is, and if that's your situation I'll say so.

    • Most of the time it isn't. A reasonable system, placed roughly where the manufacturer says to put it, shouldn't be the thing holding you back. But if your speakers are genuinely in the wrong spot or your amp is underpowered for the room, no amount of coaching fixes that, and I'd rather point you toward what to do about it.

  • I'm the tech person, not the worship leader. Is this for me?

    • Yes, but bring your worship leader into it if you can.

    • A lot of what I'm going to point at is upstream of the console, and you can't change most of it by yourself. That's not a knock on you. It's usually the reason the console has felt so hard.

Whether you want one honest look at where you are or ninety days of working on it together, I'd be glad to help.
